Social Marketing

Over the past few years, the social media and networking arenas have been expanding exponentially.  There is an article we are able to read for Dr. Karam's class that mentions marketing through word of mouth and paying customers to solicit their friends or people they believe are good candidates for the companies services.  What I wonder about, is if social networking sites would work for friends to solicit for others without posting advertisements through pop ups or whatever can be used.  basically saying, does word of mouth marketing or (pull-marketing) work by using peoples statuses.  Does a person mentioning "this place is great" or "just had the best experience of my life" really sell a product or service?  Its not even face-to-face contact anymore that makes this world work, and if thats true we can relate this back to the beginning of the semester with regards to the disconnect of people.  I'm starting to wonder if we could operate the world with no face-to-face contact.  What do you think?

  1. Interesting because earlier in the semester I wrote a blog about'facebook places' and the article upon which the blog based cited using the feature as a marketing tool. Friends who see other friends have "checked in" somewhere may be prompted to visit that place based simply on one of their friends visiting said placed and posting it on their facebook page.

  2. I see the social networkings moving towards this type of business, and I am not a huge fan. I believe that personal interaction can be a critical part of doing business with someone, and if the world is moving towards a place where this interaction, even if this is via telephone or email, I fear for our society. So much important information can be decided from the impression an individual leaves in this type of interaction, and I personally would prefer to do business, or not do business, with someone i know rather than someone I do not. We should change the names of these types of 'social' sites to 'eliminating society' websites.

  3. Sure, face-to-face contact is not something anyone needs anymore. Every now and then, you probably get to meet a couple of your several hundred friends from the social networks but it happens occasionally and is no longer necessary to do so in order to “control” your connections with people. So, what the heck, everything goes online nowadays…
